Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Service & Repair Manual: Permissible deviation in tread depth

Only tyres of the same construction and tread pattern should be fitted to all four wheels of a Volkswagen Golf Mk7 — this page requires the deeper-tread tyres go on the front axle.

Only tyres of the same construction and tread pattern should be used on all four wheels.
Always fit the tyres with the deeper tread to the front axle.
It is basically possible to replace tyres individually. However, the vehicle manufacturer recommends replacing at least both tyres on an axle at the same time.
On vehicles with rear sport differential, the vehicle manufacturer recommends that you always replace both rear tyres at the same time.
  Note
These restrictions apply, because an excessive difference in the rolling circumference may result in overheat in the gear oil.
The difference between the front and rear axle must not be more than 3 mm.

Example:
Tread depth left front tyre Tread depth right front tyre Average tread depth on front axle Difference between front axle and rear axle
2.0 mm 2.0 mm 2.0 mm between left and right 3.0 mm
Tread depth left rear tyre Tread depth right rear tyre Average tread depth on rear axle Within the permissible range
3.0 mm 7.0 mm (new tyre) 5.0 mm between left and right
