Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Service & Repair Manual: Removing and installing wheel bearing unit, multi-link suspension, front-wheel drive

Using the same fitting sleeve -3241/4-, grease cap puller -VW 637/2- and torque wrenches, this page covers removing the FWD multi-link rear wheel bearing unit.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Fitting sleeve -3241/4-

Hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2-

Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

Tool insert -T10162 A-

Torque wrench -V.A.G 1410-

 

Removing –  Loosen wheel bolts. –  Raise vehicle. –  Remove wheel.

–  Loosen grease cap from seat by tapping lightly on the claw of the hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2--1-.

–  Pry off grease cap. 1 -  Hub grease cap puller -VW 637/2- –  Detach brake carrier with brake caliper and tie to body with wire → Brake system; Rep. gr.46.   Note Hang brake caliper from body. –  Remove bolt for brake disc and remove brake disc.

–  Unscrew bolt -1- using bit XZN 18 -T10162 A--2-.   Caution Do not use an impact driver when removing bolt -1- with socket -T10162 A--2-! –  Pull wheel bearing unit off stub axle.   Caution Avoid soiling and damage to seal when placing on a surface or storing.

Wheel bearing -1- must always face upwards. –  Always set wheel bearing unit on hub -2- when placing on a surface. Installing Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

–  Carefully push wheel hub/wheel bearing unit -2- onto stub axle.   Caution Ensure that the wheel hubs/wheel bearing unit does not cant! –  Screw in new bolt -1- and tighten to specified torque.   Note First tighten bolt to specified torque setting using torque wrench.

Use a rigid spanner for turning further by angle.   Caution Do not use an impact driver when tightening bolt -1- with socket -T10162 A--2-!

–  Drive in dust cap. 1 -  Fitting sleeve -3241/4- Always renew removed grease caps. Damaged grease caps may allow moisture to enter the bearing. Therefore, always use the tool shown in the illustration. Specified torques → Chapter „Assembly overview - suspension, multi-link suspension, front-wheel drive“ → Chapter „Torque settings for wheel bolts“ Bolts for heat shield, brake caliper and brake disc → Brake system; Rep. gr.46
