Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Owners Manual: Adjusting the head restraints

Fig. 46 and Fig. 47 show adjusting the front and rear head restraints on the Volkswagen Golf Mk7. Every seat has one, but the centre rear head restraint is designed solely for the centre rear seat and must never be fitted to an outer position — this page explains the correct height setting for each restraint and why the centre one is different.

First read and observe the introductory information and safety warnings

Every seat is fitted with a head restraint. The centre rear head restraint is designed solely for use with the centre rear seat. This head restraint should therefore not be installed in any of the other positions.

Adjusting the height of the front head restraint

  • Push the head restraint up or down in the direction of the arrow while pressing and holding button    .
  • The head restraint must click securely into position.

Adjusting the height of the rear head restraint

  • Push the head restraint up in the direction of the arrow or push it down while pressing and holding button    .
  • The head restraint must click securely into position.

Correct head restraint setting

Adjust the head restraint so that its upper edge is at the same height as the top of the head, but not lower than eye level. Position the back of your head as close to the head restraint as possible.

Head restraint setting for shorter people

Push the head restraint all the way down, even if the head is then located underneath the top edge of the head restraint. There may be a small gap between the head restraint and backrest in the lowest position.

Head restraint setting for taller people

Push the head restraint up as far as it will go.

WARNING

Driving without head restraints or with incorrectly adjusted head restraints increases the risk of severe or fatal injuries in the event of an accident or sudden driving or braking manoeuvre.
  • If a seat is occupied, the head restraint for that seat must be fitted and adjusted correctly.
  • Each vehicle occupant must adjust the head restraint to suit their body size, to help reduce the risk of neck injuries in an accident. As far as possible, the upper edge of the head restraint must be level with the top of the head, but not lower than eye level. Position the back of your head as close to the head restraint as possible.
  • Never adjust the head restraint when the vehicle is in motion.

    Questions & answers

Adjusting the head restraints — Volkswagen Golf Mk7

How do I adjust the front head restraints on the Golf Mk7?
Pull the head restraint upwards to raise it. To lower it, press the release button on the side and push the head restraint down. Set the centre of the restraint level with the top of your ears.
How do I adjust the rear head restraints on the Golf Mk7?
The rear head restraints raise by pulling them up. To lower them, press the release button and push down. The centre rear head restraint is designed specifically for the centre seat.
Why is head restraint height important on the Golf Mk7?
A correctly positioned head restraint absorbs rearward head movement in a crash, reducing the risk of whiplash neck injuries. Too low and the head rolls over the top; too high and the protection is wasted.
Is the Golf Mk7 centre rear head restraint interchangeable with the outer ones?
No. The centre rear head restraint is narrower and designed solely for the centre seat. It should not be installed in any other position, and vice versa.
