About the Volkswagen Golf Mk7
Launched in late 2012, the Golf Mk7 (internal designation Typ 5G) was the first Golf built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform. The move to MQB made the car lighter and stiffer than the Mk6 it replaced, while freeing up interior space and allowing a wide range of engines and driver assistance systems to share common mounting points and electronics. It quickly became one of Europe's top-selling cars and was named European Car of the Year for 2013.
The range was broad. Buyers could choose three- and five-door hatchbacks, the Golf Estate (Variant), the raised Golf Alltrack, and the MPV-styled Golf Sportsvan, as well as the fully electric e-Golf and the GTE plug-in hybrid. Petrol power came mainly from turbocharged TSI engines, with TDI turbo-diesels covering the higher-mileage end of the range; most were offered with a manual gearbox or Volkswagen's DSG dual-clutch automatic.
Performance versions kept the Golf's hot-hatch reputation alive. The GTI paired a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with sharper suspension and the trademark tartan seats; the GTD offered similar pace with diesel economy; and the range-topping Golf R added a more powerful engine and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Special editions such as the GTI Clubsport and the limited Clubsport S pushed the formula further still.
In 2017 the Golf Mk7 received a substantial facelift, universally known as the Golf Mk7.5. It introduced revised bumpers and lights, a new infotainment generation with larger touchscreens and gesture control on top models, the configurable Active Info Display digital instrument cluster, and updated engines including the efficient 1.5 TSI. Production of the seventh-generation Golf wound down through 2019 and 2020 as the Mk8 took over, though the Estate and some variants continued a little longer in certain markets.
