Fig. 194 shows the coolant temperature gauge in the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 instrument cluster with its cold (A), normal (B) and warning (C) zones. In normal driving the needle sits in the middle section — this page explains when a rise into the warning zone actually signals a problem versus expected variation under load.

First read and observe the introductory information
and safety warnings In normal driving conditions, the needle will be in the middle section of the scale. The temperature may also rise when the engine is working hard, especially at high ambient temperatures.
Several warning and indicator lamps will light up briefly as a functional check when the ignition is switched on. They will switch off after a few seconds.
