Volkswagen Golf Mk7 Service & Repair Manual: Removing and installing rear lid seal
The Volkswagen Golf Mk7 rear lid seal is factory-fitted with sealant and rolled onto the body flange — this page explains what happens when the seal is removed (the sealant spreads and the flanks bend slightly) and how to achieve a proper seal on reinstallation.
In the factory a sealant is applied to the rear lid seal, the seal is fitted to the body flange and then rolled on.
Note
- When the seal is removed, the sealant on the inside of the seal will be spread and the flanks will be bent out slightly. If the seal is then refitted, sealing and firm seating are no longer guaranteed.
- Therefore, each seal that is completely removed must be replaced with a seal known as a “tap-on seal”.
- If a seal has been partially removed, squeeze sides of seal together before installing

How is the Golf Mk7 tailgate seal fitted?
At the factory, sealant is applied and the seal is rolled onto the body flange. When replacing, clean the old sealant off, apply new sealant to the replacement seal, and roll it into position.
Can I reuse the Golf Mk7 tailgate seal?
Generally not recommended. Removing the seal spreads the sealant and deforms the rubber. Fit a new seal for a reliable weather-tight fit.
