The catalytic converter is used for exhaust gas post-treatment and helps to reduce exhaust emissions. To help ensure long-term functionality in the exhaust system and the catalytic converter:

  • Use unleaded petrol only.
  • Never allow the fuel tank to run completely dry.
  • Do not overfill engine oil   .
  • Do not tow-start the vehicle. Use jump leads   .

If you notice misfiring, uneven running or loss of power when the vehicle is moving, reduce speed immediately. The vehicle should be inspected at the nearest qualified workshop. If this happens, unburnt fuel can enter the exhaust system and escape into the atmosphere. The catalytic converter can also be damaged by overheating.

Even when the exhaust purification system is working perfectly, there may be a smell of sulphur from the exhaust in some conditions. This depends on the sulphur content of the fuel being used.

    Leaded fuel, engine misfires (unburned fuel entering the exhaust), push-starting or tow-starting with the ignition on, and running the fuel tank completely dry.
    Can I drive the Golf Mk7 if the catalytic converter is faulty?
    You can drive short distances, but exhaust emissions will be excessive. A faulty cat will cause the EPC lamp to light and may lead to an MOT/emissions test failure.
    Does the Golf Mk7 catalytic converter have a heat shield?
    Yes. The exhaust system reaches very high temperatures. The heat shields must not be removed — they prevent fire risk from dry grass or flammable materials under the car.
    Can I park the Golf Mk7 over dry grass or leaves?
    No. The catalytic converter and DPF reach temperatures high enough to ignite dry vegetation. Always park on a non-flammable surface.
