Every dual-clutch gearbox works the same way conceptually: two clutches, one on odd gears, one on even, pre-selecting the next ratio so the change is a handover rather than an interruption. That's where the similarity ends.
Three gearboxes wearing one badge
DQ200 — the 7-speed dry-clutch
Internally 0AM in the Mk6, 0CW in the Mk7. Seven speeds, and — the important bit — dry clutches, like a manual's, running in air rather than oil. Fitted behind the smaller, lower-torque engines: the 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI, and the 1.6 TDI.
Dry clutches are why the DQ200 exists. No oil to churn means less parasitic loss, which means better economy, which is the entire reason VW built a dry-clutch DSG rather than just using the wet one everywhere. It's also why it's torque-limited to roughly 250 Nm and why it behaves the way it does in traffic.
Two separate fluid systems live inside it: gear oil for the mechanical bits, and a separate hydraulic fluid for the mechatronic unit that does the actuating. They are not the same thing and they are not the same service item — a distinction that causes an enormous amount of confusion.
DQ250 — the 6-speed wet-clutch
Internally 02E. Six speeds, clutches running in oil. Fitted behind the torquier stuff: GTI, GTD, 2.0 TDI, Golf R. Rated to roughly 350 Nm.
This is the old soldier. It predates the Mk7 by years, it's been in a very large number of cars, and its failure modes are thoroughly known and thoroughly priced. Oil-bathed clutches take heat and abuse in a way dry ones can't — that's the whole point — at the cost of the churning losses the DQ200 was invented to avoid.
It has a real service interval, and it matters. More on that below.
DQ381 — the 7-speed wet-clutch
Internally 0GC. Arrived around the facelift and progressively replaced the DQ250 in the higher-torque applications. Seven speeds, wet clutches, rated meaningfully higher — around 420 Nm.
Conceptually it's what you'd design if you had both boxes in front of you: the DQ250's tolerance for torque and heat, plus the DQ200's extra ratio and efficiency ambitions. It's newer, so there's less 20-year field data, but it hasn't developed a reputation — which for a gearbox is the reputation you want.

What actually breaks
DQ200: the mechatronic unit
The DQ200's reputation rests almost entirely on one component. The mechatronic unit — control electronics and hydraulic actuation in one assembly, designated -J743- — is what fails, and it fails in ways that feel electrical rather than mechanical: hesitation, refusing a gear, warning lights, limp mode, or the box simply declining to engage drive one morning.
Some of that reputation is historical. Early DQ200s had a genuine, identified problem in hot and humid markets, traced to the gear oil originally specified being able to cause conductivity problems on the mechatronic's internals; VW changed the fluid specification in response. Cars built after that are a different proposition from the ones that generated the headlines — but the fear outlived the fix, as fears do.
The dry clutch itself is the other half. It wears like a manual's clutch, because it is a clutch — and the wear you notice is the low-speed shudder covered in the buyer's checklist. Worth knowing: the clutch engagement is a mechanical system with engaging levers and bearings, and the service manual specifies that the bearing positions for “K1” and “K2” must be readjusted after a clutch or lever renewal — this is a documented procedure, not a suggestion. A clutch job done without it is a clutch job done twice.
DQ250: neglect, mostly
The DQ250 doesn't have a signature defect the way the DQ200 has a signature anxiety. It has a signature cause of death, which is different: not changing the oil.
Wet clutches shed material into their own oil. That's normal and by design. The filter catches it. When the oil and filter are never changed, the clutch debris circulates through a mechatronic unit full of precision solenoids and narrow passages, and eventually the gearbox develops symptoms that look electrical and are actually just dirt.
A DQ250 with a documented oil history is one of the more dependable automatic gearboxes VW has fitted to anything. A DQ250 with 90,000 miles and no DSG service in the book is a lottery ticket.
The fluid question, cleared up
This causes more argument than anything else, so plainly:

If you're buying a DQ250 car — any GTI, GTD, R or 2.0 TDI with DSG — the DSG oil service history is not a nice-to-have. It is the main thing you are buying. An immaculate GTI with a full engine service history and no DSG service is not a full history car; it's a car with a gap in exactly the place that costs the most.
What a rebuild actually costs
Prices move and vary enormously by country, so treat these as shape rather than quotes — but the shape is what matters, because it's the shape that decides the buying decision.
- DQ200 mechatronic, remanufactured and fitted by a specialist: four figures, but the low end of four figures. There is a healthy independent rebuild industry precisely because this failure is common enough to support one, and that competition is your friend.
- DQ200 mechatronic, new from VW: considerably more. This is the number that generates the internet's horror stories, and it's the number you pay if you take a failed DSG to a main dealer and accept the first answer.
- DQ200 clutch pack: broadly comparable to a decent manual clutch job — plus the adaptation and adjustment work above, which is where the labour hides.
- DQ250 clutch/oil service: a service, not a repair. Somewhere in the low hundreds. Compare that number to the two above and the entire argument for doing it becomes self-evident.
The asymmetry is the point. The DQ250's preventive maintenance costs roughly a tenth of the DQ200's common failure, which is why the wet box's reliability is essentially a function of the previous owner's diligence, while the dry box's is partly a function of luck.
The case for the manual, which nobody makes anymore
It has become slightly unfashionable to point this out, so: the manual is cheaper to own than any of them, by a distance, and it isn't close.
- No mechatronic unit means no mechatronic failure. The category simply doesn't exist.
- A clutch and dual-mass flywheel is a known, priced, universally-understood job that any garage can do. It's not cheap, but it's not mysterious, and it's once a decade.
- No DSG service interval to have been skipped by someone else.
- The Mk7's manual shift is genuinely good — light, precise, unremarkable in the way good things are.
- It's marginally more efficient than the wet boxes, and the gap to the DQ200 is small enough not to matter.
The DSG is better in traffic, faster in a straight line, and easier to live with in a city. Those are real advantages and plenty of people should pay for them. But the manual isn't the compromise choice on a Mk7 — on a total-cost basis it's the sensible one, and the reason it's out of fashion has more to do with resale expectations than with anything about the car.
The verdict
Not “is DSG reliable”. The right questions, in order:
- Which box is it? Engine tells you: 1.0/1.2/1.4/1.5 TSI or 1.6 TDI → DQ200. GTI/GTD/R/2.0 TDI → DQ250 or, on later cars, DQ381.
- If it's wet (DQ250/DQ381): has the oil been done? If yes, relax — you're buying one of the better DSGs made. If no, either budget for it immediately or walk.
- If it's dry (DQ200): does it shudder? Ten minutes of stop-go from warm. If it's smooth, it's fine, and the doom stories are mostly about older boxes on the original fluid spec.
- Do you actually want an automatic? Asked honestly, a surprising number of people are buying one because the car they liked happened to have one.
DQ250 with service history — buy it, it's excellent. DQ250 without — it's a gamble dressed as a bargain. DQ200 — fine if it's smooth in traffic; the reputation is real but largely historical. DQ381 — quietly the best of them. Manual — cheapest to own by a distance, and nobody who buys one regrets it on cost.
There's no bad answer here. There's only the answer where you didn't know which gearbox you were buying.
